The Bulldog
Once bred for the bull-baiting rings of England, then lovingly re-engineered into the world's most dedicated couch companion: sourmug face, heart of solid gold.
Temperament, honestly
4 traitsLiving with one
4 essentialsHeat is the enemy
The most heat-sensitive breed there is. Air-conditioning in summer, walks at dawn or dusk, and never, ever a parked car.
Wrinkle upkeep
Clean and dry the facial folds — and the tail pocket — several times a week to keep infections out of the creases.
Weight & joints
Obesity finds this breed fast and their hips pay for it. Measured meals and a firm treat policy add years.
Short strolls only
Twenty to thirty gentle minutes a day, in cool hours. Watch the breathing and stop well before they're labouring.

White base with bold patches of brindle, fawn or red.A note on "exotic" Bulldogs: blue, lilac, merle and chocolate coats command spectacular premiums, but none are recognised by the AKC standard and the fashionable genes can bring extra skin and health problems to a breed that already has enough on its plate. Whatever the coat, a Pawtrait renders it faithfully — wrinkles, jowls and all.

What one actually costs
First-year estimates, USDBreeding requires assistance and planned Caesareans, which is why Bulldogs are never cheap.
Among the most expensive breeds to insure: airway, skin, hips and eyes all count against the premium.
A solid appetite and a talent for weight gain. Portion control is genuine preventative medicine here.
Routine care, fold wipes, a cooling mat, and airway checks. The sourmug maintenance schedule is real.

The questions everyone GooglesAre Bulldogs lazy?
They're low-energy by design and by anatomy — their airway makes hard exercise genuinely difficult, so the couch devotion is part physiology, part preference. They still need a gentle daily walk to stay healthy; think of it as efficient rather than lazy.
Why are Bulldogs so expensive?
Because producing them is expensive: most litters require artificial insemination and a planned Caesarean delivery, litters are small, and demand never dips. That reality is priced into every reputable breeder's puppies — a suspiciously cheap Bulldog is a warning sign, not a bargain.
Can Bulldogs swim?
No — and with this breed it's not negotiable. Their dense, front-heavy build and short legs mean Bulldogs sink, quickly. Around any water deeper than their elbows, a properly fitted dog life vest and close supervision are essential.
How long do Bulldogs live?
Typically eight to ten years. The honest levers for reaching the top of that range: keep them lean, keep them cool, stay on top of airway and skin care, and buy from a breeder who health-tests rather than one chasing extreme features.
Are Bulldogs good with kids?
Famously — it's one of the breed's great strengths. They're sturdy enough for family chaos, patient beyond reason, and far too fond of people to be anything but gentle. Supervise as you would with any dog, and teach kids to respect nap time, which is most of the time.
Do Bulldogs have a lot of health problems?
Honestly, yes — more than most breeds. The flat face brings airway issues, the folds need constant care, and hips, eyes and skin all carry elevated risks. Two things change the odds meaningfully: a breeder who prioritises health over extreme looks, and comprehensive insurance from day one.
