01Comedian, on purpose
Frenchies are famous for knowing exactly when they're being funny. They'll repeat a trick that got a laugh, lean into a silly expression, and generally behave like they're aware of their own audience. It's a big part of why they've become the dog of choice for apartment dwellers who want personality without acreage.
02Stubborn in a charming way
Bred originally as companion dogs rather than working dogs, Frenchies were never selected for eager obedience the way retrievers were. They're smart enough to learn quickly, they just don't always see the point. Short, reward-heavy training sessions work far better than long structured ones.
03Surprisingly low energy
A short burst of zoomies, then back to the couch. Their flat-faced anatomy makes sustained exertion genuinely harder for them than for longer-snouted breeds, so their low drive isn't laziness, it's closer to a physical limit worth respecting, especially in heat.
04Velcro by nature
Frenchies form intensely close bonds with their people and don't do well left alone for long stretches. They'll often follow you room to room not out of anxiety but simple preference, this is a breed that considers "near you" to be the correct default location.

Their short airway makes overheating a real risk. Avoid exercise in heat, and never leave them in a parked car, even briefly.

Face fold cleaning

Wipe the facial folds a few times a week to prevent skin irritation and infection from trapped moisture.

Spinal & airway checks

Prone to spinal disc issues and brachycephalic airway syndrome. Annual vet checks matter more than for most breeds.

Short, gentle walks

Two 15-20 minute walks beat one long one. Watch for heavy panting and stop before they're struggling.

Brindle

Dark coat streaked with lighter hair. The original Frenchie look.

Cream

Uniform pale coat, AKC-recognised and always in demand.

Pied

White base with patches of brindle or fawn. No two alike.

Blue

Silvery grey. Fashionable and pricey, but not AKC standard.

A note on "exotic" colours: blue, lilac and merle Frenchies command premium prices, but the genes behind them can carry added skin and health risks, and none are recognised by the AKC breed standard. Whatever the coat, a Pawtrait renders it faithfully — brindle streaks and all.

Do French Bulldogs shed?

Yes, but lightly. Their short single coat sheds year-round at a low level, with a modest uptick in spring and autumn. A weekly once-over with a grooming mitt keeps it under control — no professional grooming required.

Can French Bulldogs swim?

No — and this one matters. Their dense, top-heavy build and short legs mean most Frenchies sink rather than paddle. Around pools, boats or beaches, a properly fitted dog life vest is essential, not optional.

Are French Bulldogs good with kids?

Generally yes. They're sturdy, patient and playful without being hyper, which makes them a strong match for families. As with any breed, supervise interactions with young children and teach kids to respect the dog's space.

How much does a French Bulldog cost?

Expect roughly $1,500–$4,500 from a reputable breeder in the US, with fashionable colours like blue and lilac often costing more. Budget a further $1,500–$3,000 per year for insurance, food and vet care — Frenchies are one of the more expensive breeds to keep healthy.

Can French Bulldogs be left alone?
