The Beagle
England's rabbit-hunting pack hound, issued with the nose of a detective and the voice of an opera singer, and now one of the world's most beloved family dogs.
Temperament, honestly

4 essentialsFort Knox fencing
Beagles are gifted escape artists who dig under and squeeze through. Check the fence line regularly — the nose finds every gap first.
An hour a day, on lead
Proper walks plus sniffing time — a Beagle's walk is a reading session for the nose. Under-walked ones howl and dig.
Guard the food
Legendary thieves with zero shame and a talent for obesity. Measure meals, secure bins, and never trust a quiet kitchen.
Mind the ears
Those glorious drop ears trap moisture and invite infection. A weekly check and gentle clean keeps them healthy.

White flecked with blue-grey mottling. Field-line finery. One detail almost every Beagle shares, whatever the colour: a white-tipped tail. It was bred in deliberately — the "flag" let hunters spot their hounds above tall grass with noses buried in a scent. The breed standard accepts any true hound colour, so no Beagle coat is "rarer" or worth a premium. Whatever the mix, a Pawtrait renders it faithfully, flag and all.

The questions everyone GooglesDo Beagles bark a lot?
Yes — and it comes in three settings: the standard bark, the on-scent bay, and the full ancestral howl. They were bred to be heard across entire fields. Training, exercise and company moderate it substantially, but a Beagle will never be a silent dog.
Are Beagles good family dogs?
One of the best. They're sturdy, patient, merry and genuinely fond of children, and their pack instincts make them thrive in busy households. The trade-offs are the voice, the food theft, and their dislike of being left alone for long stretches.
Why do Beagles howl?
It's pack communication — the baying that told hunters (and the rest of the pack) a scent was found carries straight into modern life, where sirens, other dogs and loneliness all trigger it. A well-exercised Beagle with company howls far less; a bored, lonely one performs for the whole street.
How much does a Beagle cost?
Roughly $500–$2,000 from a reputable breeder in the US — one of the more affordable purebreds — and they're common in rescues. Budget around $1,000–$2,000 per year for food, insurance and vet care; they're a generally healthy, economical breed to keep.
Can Beagles be left alone?
Four to six hours is the realistic ceiling, and even that goes better after a proper walk. They're pack animals to the bone, and prolonged solitude reliably turns into howling — which your neighbours will document. A second dog genuinely helps with this breed.
Are Beagles easy to train?
They're clever but independent — bred to follow their own judgement in the field, and it shows. Food-based training works brilliantly because the stomach outvotes the nose. The honest exception is off-lead recall: against a fresh scent trail, no amount of training makes it reliable.
